Commercial Manager and Team Leader

Summary:

This position works as part of the company management team to implement the operational plan as established by the COO. The incumbent is responsible for overall management of Commercial Insurance and staff, while maintaining and growing the Commercial client base and monitoring renewals. The incumbent will train, coach, supervise and ensure the performance of Commercial Insurance staff for Nation West, its trade brands and subsidiaries.

This position has decision-making responsibility for a major segment of the company which has a significant impact on operations and earnings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following in three distinct areas. Other duties may be assigned.

Insurance Management:

  • Manages the Commercial Insurance line, ensuring clients’ needs are satisfied in a professional manner.
  • Reviews Commercial Insurance applications for accuracy and provides staff with guidance.
  • Submits mid-size and large new insurance applications to market and follows up with underwriters.
  • Negotiates with underwriters to secure clients the best coverage for their needs at the best price.
  • Supports Account Executives, providing expertise, advice and ideas for new business.
  • Trains staff in up-selling or cross-selling, e.g. Making sure all clients are offered expanded or new coverage options.
  • Safeguards the company against the occurrence of errors and omissions by mandating company processes and protocols are followed and adhered to.
  • Keeps track of all Commercial renewals.
  • Routinely follows up on insurance renewals, ensuring Account Executives contact clients well before their renewal date, their coverage is clarified, and their questions are answered.
  • Works with Commercial Assistant to produce Certificates of Insurance and handles client calls as required.
  • Maintains a listing of all open Commercial Insurance claims and ensures Account Executives along with Claims staff person follows-up regularly with the client and adjuster ensuring the claim is processed efficiently and fairly.
  • Proactively contacts Commercial Market Reps, at least every six months, to obtain product updates and review the underwriter’s “appetite” for new business.
  • Arrange with Commercial Markets, training and or refresh sessions, both in person and on Teams.
  • Actively participates in their designated peer advisory group(s) of the Canadian Broker Network and advises the COO of best practice recommendations which would benefit Nation West.
  • Manages Commercial Insurance staff, providing ongoing leadership and mentoring.
  • Facilitates process training of Commercial staff on soliciting new business, renewals, endorsements, cancellations, claims, and dealing with start and end of day abeyances.
  • Ensures systems training of Commercial staff on Broker and Client Management systems both initially and with ongoing refreshers.
  • Makes recommendations for new Commercial Executives, and with the CPO interviews and hires new Commercial Insurance staff
  • Manages commercial staff attendance, overtime, sick time, vacation schedules with HR department.
  • Develops, implements and oversees improvements in Commercial Dept procedures and processes.
  • Trains staff on underwriting updates and changes.
  • Manages staff performance, providing feedback, coaching and encouragement.
  • Coordinates regular Commercial Insurance lines staff meetings.
  • Chairs the annual Commercial Team summit.
  • Arranges for a Commercial Market or MGA to present to the Commercial Team either in person or on Teams at least twice per month. Additional Teams meetings are to be arranged as required.
  • Promotes a fair and respectful workplace.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises, trains and evaluates the performance of the Commercial Insurance staff.

Maintains Performance Standards

  • Effectively trains, evaluates and retains Commercial insurance staff
  • Develops, maintains and administers sound policies and practices to ensure clients are fully satisfied.
  • Successfully ensures new Commercial clients are acquired according to Nation West guidelines and existing clients are retained.
  • Grows the Nation West client base, contributing to an increase in Commercial policies/premiums.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the essential duties satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

At a minimum, completion of Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker 4 (CAIB 4). Canadian Professional Insurance Broker (CPIB), Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) or Fellow CIP {FCIP) while not required would more than fulfill the education requirement

  • A minimum of five years’ experience in the insurance broker industry with comprehensive knowledge of Commercial Insurance
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in staff and workload management, preferably in the insurance broker industry
  • Comprehensive knowledge of all Commercial Insurance products and underwriting guidelines
  • Proficient in various Broker Management systems Incl: Power Broker, Applied EPIC, EZ ITV, BVS, Policy Works, Pathway, and capable of assisting staff.
