Tips to protect your business against cyber attacks
Taking Care of the Basics
On top of having business insurance, make sure you follow these practical tips…
Keep data out of unauthorized reach – practice “clean desk” and “put away” policies to keep sensitive information away from unauthorized individuals.
Lock up sensitive data.
Restrict access to data to only those who have a “need to know”.
Put security systems in place and ensure all visitors sign-in.
Record and regularly review your data practices and retrain staff when changes are made.
Managing Your Technology
Conduct routine audits to ensure that the policies you have in place are working to protect data.
Limit the use of portable technology when dealing with sensitive information and ensure remote access to your network is secure.
Don’t use unsecured wireless networks as they do not provide adequate enterprise-level security to protect data.
Install antivirus, anti-spyware and firewalls. To maintain the most up-to-date protection, download system and security patches and antivirus and anti-malware updates.
Review and consider any and all access that outside contractors or vendors have to sensitive data and determine the need for such access.
Properly dispose of sensitive data. Implement policies on how to securely destroy any technology hardware that may contain sensitive information. Similar practices should be used to properly dispose of sensitive data that is paper-based.
