The Importance of a Home Inventory System

Your house is filled with personal belongings that truly make it a home. Every item in your home either helps you accomplish necessary tasks or brings you joy. But if asked, could you make a list of every item in your home? You would remember the larger, more essential items. But what about your favourite movie that you haven’t watched in a while or the cake platter your mother gave you for your birthday. If your home burns down, or you suffer another covered incident, you will have to make a list of all your possession to get the correct payment from your insurer.

In order to do this, you must make a “home inventory”. Taking inventory is a tedious process; you will be thankful you spent the time to do so, especially in the event of a catastrophe. Keeping a list on hand, will streamline the claims process; allowing for a more complete restoration of your property and contents.

You can handwrite this list, type it, or take a video of your home. Go room by room, focusing on the items that you would want replaced if lost or damaged. Pay special attention to items such as furniture, electronics, appliances, media collections, kitchenware, clothing, artwork, and other items of value.

For each item you list, write a short description, the estimated dollar value, manufacturer/brand information, model number and take a photograph. Some items, such as an old pair of sneakers won’t need individual pictures.

Once your inventory list is complete, make several copies and distribute them to your insurance agent, a trusted friend or family member, your safety deposit box or a fire safe in your home. This will protect your inventory in cases of extreme loss or destruction. It may be wise to keep an electronic copy as well.

Remember to update your inventory list at least once a year. Add recent photos, and expensive items.

An up-to date inventory system is the best support for your homeowners or renters insurance policy.
